Aydın the 20th populous city of Turkey is located in Aegean Region and surrounded by the provinces of Denizli, Izmir, Manisa, Mugla and the Aegean Sea to the west. It is bordered by the Aydin Mountains to the North and the Mentese Mountains to the South. Lies the Buyuk Menderes Basin between those mountains and forms a vast firtile agricultural land due to silt deposits washed down by The River  Buyuk Menderes.

Modern city of Aydin stans on the site of the ancient city of ‘Tralleis’. Tralleis was founded by Thracian tribes that settled along the western Anatolian coast in the 13th C BC. The city was renamed as Caesareia to honour Emperor Augustus who had reconstructed it after the earthquake in 26 BC.

Tralleis was called ‘Aydin Guzel Hisari’ (beautiful fortress of Adin) during the reign of the Seljuks. The city has been known as Aydin since 19th century.
